The Mariano A. Elia Chair in Italian-Canadian Studies at York University is established with an endowment from the Mariano Anthony Elia Charitable Foundation and matching funds from the Department of the Secretary of State of Canada. Its mandate is to promote knowledge of the Italian-Canadian experience and its contribution to the development of Canada through teaching, research and publication, public forums, conferences, and community outreach. The Chair’s program begins with teaching in Italian-Canadian Studies and the launch of its public outreach programs.
A program of sessional appointments begins. Each Chair Holder is appointed on a visiting basis to advance research and scholarship in the field of Italian-Canadian Studies. The first visiting research Chair Holder is appointed during the 1986/87 academic year. This practice is followed annually or every other year until the 1993/94 academic year when administration of the Chair comes under the auspices of an appointed York University faculty member.
The Chair endowment is greatly enhanced by a substantial donation from the Elia Foundation and the announcement of a permanent Elia Chair Holder. This year also marks the passing of Dr. Mariano A. Elia, founding donor of the Chair.
